Beginning Piano EducationBeginning a new instrument comes with its challenges. When I learnt the fundamental piano foundations through the 'Progressive Piano Method for Beginners Books'. These books are incredibly popular for young learners, and I believe that it has a logical approach to learning music. This method takes the approach of learning how to sight read and associating the music with the keys on the piano. These books sell for around $20 each and can be purchased from your local music store. |
The Manual of SyllabusesFor piano grades, I teach using the AMEB's Manual of Syllabuses, which contains all the content and dot-points of what is expected in instrument examinations. As part of the Manual of Syllabuses, the AMEB has book series with the piano pieces of each grade and piano style. These piece books can be found at your local music store. There isn't any need for you to purchase the Manual of Syllabus or Sight Reading/Aural Book. However, you will need to purchase the piece books. |
Learning Music TheoryLearning music theory is essential to understanding music and expanding one's musicality. To teach music theory I use flashcards (for piano beginners) and a series of books called BlitzBooks by Samantha Coates. These books not only teach an understanding of music, but also aid students to completing theory examinations by AMEB. Theory can be completed at home, and marked by me when coming for a lesson. If the student would like to develop other skills (e.g. composing), the same series of books can also help with this. You can purchase the books from your local music store. |
